Our first steps in starting your organic vegetable garden are:
- Finding an area in your yard that receives six or more hours of sunlight each day. Front or back yards can work equally as well, although some cities and neighborhood associations prohibit gardens in front yards. If you don’t think your yard will work, check out your neighbors’. They may have the ideal space and the desire for a large garden that can feed some or all of the block!
- Ensuring access to running water.
- Locating an area for a compost pile – composting is an important part of sustainability. An area three feet by three feet is sufficient.
- Determining how many people you would like your garden to feed.
- Noting any wildlife traffic through your yard. Do you receive regular visits from deer, groundhogs, rabbits, or rats? (If rats are present, we highly recommend removing them immediately, whether or not you have a garden!)
